#37 The Radharani Express

Here on W. 34 1/2 Street, there are railroad tracks that run behind the homes on the other side of the street. Because the tracks cross a street at the end of the block, the train whistle has to sound a warning... at least 5 or 6 blasts before it reaches the crossing. The devotees tell me that Tamala Krsna Maharaja would call it "The Radharani Express." Every time the train comes, the devotees think "Here comes 'The Radharani Express' "

On Tuesday evening at 6 pm, Mother Lore's body was carried from the home and lovingly placed into the waiting vehicle, accompanied by kirtan. The large back double doors were closed and the long black transport car pulled out of the driveway. Devotees followed out into the street and watched as it made a right turn to drive past the temple and then on. We all offered our obeisances on the wet pavement.... freshly washed from the divine shower.

And then came....... The Radharani  Express!!

Whistle blasts sounding like they were from an gigantic conch shell in the heavens, announced her departure.

incredibly loud is not even the right word. The deafening blasts are so loud that they shake the sky.

Many times when Lore and I would go for an afternoon wheelchair walk, we would visit the temple and go in for darshan. I would take off Lore's shoes and wheel in the chair. First to pay respects at the vyasasana where I would point out Tamal Krsna Maharaja's picture to her. Then I would wheel her around and have darshan of Sri Sri GauraNitai, then to Radha Nilamadhava's altar. I would try to focus her attention on the color of the dress that the Lords were wearing. On to visit at Giri Govardhana's altar and then back to Radha Nilamadhva . There, I would park Lore in front of Srimati Radharani and pull up a chair next to her wheelchair. I would observe how Srimati Radharani would lovingly gaze down upon her, seated in the wheelchair. I would pray for Her to please shower Her mercy upon Mother Lore.

Sri Sri Radha Nilamadhava showered their mercy upon this tiny woman who had the courage of a lion.

Srimati Radharani has been especially kind.

#35 Today, Tomorrow, or The Next Day

The Hospice nurse visited this morning and checked Mother Lore. Her vital signs are very good, heart is still strong, blood pressure good and oxygen levels in the 90s. Her pupils are fixed and unresponsive to light. Amazingly enough, she is not experiencing any pain or discomfort. Her life force has not started to withdraw from her limbs at this point. The nurse told me that she could 'slip away' at any time. The anxiety that she has been experiencing for the past few days has disappeared and medication is no longer being administered. Lord Krsna is so kind.

Mother Kusha told me that the devotees in Vrndavana... and all over the world... are praying for the most beneficial circumstance.

O my Lord, as powerful as fire, O omnipotent one, now I offer You all obeisances, falling on the ground at Your feet. O my Lord, please lead me on the right path to reach You, and since You know all that I have done in the past, please free me from the reactions to my past sins so that there will be no hindrance to my progress.

Did you know that Mother Lore made and gifted a set of jewelry to Sri Sri Rukmini Dwarkadisha at the time of their installation?

#36 The Auspicious Departure of Mother Lore

Everyone should hear of this account of Mother Lore's passing from this world. Those who doubt of the possibility of miracles will become believers, and those who are believers will be refreshed in their faith. If you think that such phenomena are only unseen events, ethereal,  felt in the heart or just 'known'... or unknowable and unexplainable. By reading this account, you'll be given the eyes to see what we witnessed with ours........

Kirtan at Lore's home started out as 3x a week.
On the first night of chanting, Lore was still active and talking... 'not quite right' as she would say.. Her eating had diminished and sleeping increased. At one point during the kirtan, I went into her room because she had gotten up and was sitting on the edge of her bed. I sat next to her. She asked me "Who's here?" I told her that some devotees had come to sing. Her answer was "Well, we can do without that!"

I was thinking... at the last, she would probably fall into an inactive state to hear.  That's exactly what happened.
And so it began.
Her condition deteriorated. From Sunday  on...devotees came every night to chant.

Lore became anxious with a high level of pain. For 3 days, starting on Friday, she refused to eat or drink, forcibly pushing away any attempts made to feed her, unable to swallow. Her pain and panic was closely observed and managed with medications.
By Tuesday morning, the day of her passing, we knew that she was not long for this world and the Hospice nurse came and confirmed what was evident. Amazingly enough, she was peaceful and pain free.  I began to look for signs of an actively dying state. The first sign came. The bottoms of her feet became darkened, a mottled color as the live force began to withdraw from the extremities. Rasikendra was there, I told him of the situation, but he had to leave to pick Priya up from school. Padaduli was on her way. Devotees were in the house chanting.

Almost as soon as Padaduli arrived, she went in to visit Grandmother and came out in a rush, "She's leaving!"
Immediately, Giriraja Sila was put at the top of Lore's head and within a circled garland, Nrsingha Shaligram was placed on her abdomen. The devotees and kirtan came into the room like a rush of wind and filled it with the Holy Name.
It seemed like a moment...it seemed like an eternity. Lore sucked in a breath and we silently counted 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8......to 20 before another sharp in- breath.

Then, like a miracle, Lore voluntarily moved her hands. Hands that had been limp and lifeless for 2 days, moved toward Nrsingha Shaligram on her abdomen. Padaduli noticed. "Look she wants to to touch Shaliram. Put her hands there." I gently guided her hands to rest on the shiny black Nrsingha Sila.

Then again.... counting. This time until 24. Then another in- breath and counting .....past 20, past 24. Padaduli and I looked at each other ...was this it? No! Another inhale startled us. Again counting... past 20, past 24, past 30, past 35 watching and waiting for another breath that never came.

The time? 1:08pm. The most auspicious number.

We both agreed. There were no more breaths.

The kirtan swelled and soared and devotees were tossed in the ecstacy of the Holy Name. Rasikendra had returned and stood by Lore's bed to lead a kirtan deep in emotion. I told Padaduli that Grandmother was going to sit up and say, "Is that Rasikendra singing?"

Lore is very attached to Rasikendra. We think that she chose to leave when she knew he had gone out of the house. We never spoke medical information in her room. There is a sign posted in Mother Lore's room that reads.."Hare Krsna ONLY Spoken Here." She probably heard his voice as he was leaving.  The sense of hearing becomes the most acute and the only working sense left, as the end nears.

I placed a Tulasi leaf and Ganga Jal in Lore's mouth, Padaduli marked her body with tilak and tied her big toes together, to keep her legs from separating. Her body was anointed with sacred waters.
The front room, where she was to be moved, was prepared with a simple mat sprinkled with Vrndavana dust. Devotees rolled the edges of her sheet to make a hand hold and carried their Dear Mother into the front room, and placed her on the floor mat sprinkled with Vrndavana dust.  Everyone had the opportunity to offer flower petals, circumambulate, and pay our last respects. The front room filled up and devotees spilled into other rooms and the hallway. For 5 hours, the kirtan went on and on and on.

Lore's body was scheduled to leave for the funeral home at 5:30pm. Then, at that time...there was a divine shower. The sun was shining and rain was falling from a dark cloud that moved overhead. A beautiful, soft warm rain that sparkled like glitter as it fell from the sky. It is understood that the rain of a divine shower is very auspicious. The demigods are showering flowers.

At 6:00, Lore's tiny mortal frame was carried out of the house in the devotees loving hands to a waiting vehicle accompanied by kirtan. The long shiny black car drove away
and made the turn at the end of the street, to drive past the temple and then on.

The devotees offered their obeisances on the wet pavement, freshly washed from the divine shower.

Last rite services and cremation will be held the following day, May 1

Prayer Request for Mother Lore

Mother Lore has undergone changes in the past week. She's now has little desire to eat or drink , and in a weakened state doesn't leave her bed. Eveything is being done to see that she is made comfortable with round the clock care. We kindly request your prayers at this time.

#33 Reign of Terror- School Days

In only 3 months time, the course of history would now be changed forever. Hitler had set into motion the monstrous murdering political machine that would roll through more that 17 countries or territories and by some estimates, eventually claim over 70 million human lives (6 million of which were Jews), in a world war that lasted for 6 years.

For the rest of the year and into 1934, the antisemitic discrimination and bigotry escalated. Books by Jewish authors and those that didn't support the Nazi ideology were burned.  Jewish businesses were boycotted, land ownership rights taken away, and national health insurance denied. Employment for Jews was not available and they were banned from civil service, the judicial system, from contributing to the Arts of literature, theater, and music. Citizenships were revoked and denied.
An ideal standard for an Aryan race was defined and taught in schools. Children began to feel restrictions in the public school system. Jewish children had to sit in the back of the classroom and were subjected to verbal and physical abuse by the teachers and classmates. Textbooks were rewritten to indoctrinate the Nazi ideology and attack the Jewish religion and culture.  (illustration from children's primer, the sign reads 'Jews not wanted here)

Bund Deutscher Mädel or BDM, The League of German Girls in Hitler Youth,  became wildly popular and attracted a mass following. Other youth organizations were suspended unless they integrated into the organization. Although special groups for Jewish youth were still tolerated.

Lore remembers....

Those years were always overshadowed with the uncertainty of our future. We sensed that the day was not too distant that we would be informed that we were no longer welcome at school. It was a thought both painful and yet at the same time promising relief from the constant uncertainty of 'what to do?' The common greeting of "Gutten morgan" or "Gutten tag" ( Good morning or Good evening), had been replaced with "Heil Hitler!" - which Jews were not supposed to say. For the weekly assembly , our classmates appeared in their Hitler Youth BDM uniforms. We Jewish girls stood out, marked in the class of about 40, only 2 of us were Jews.  Jews were no longer allowed to share the 2 seat desk with a non Jew. All kinds of rules which I don't recall, came to be enforced. My classmates made believe they did not know me

And so, the young teen found some relief from these very difficult times by playing sports....

To me those few hours on the sports field were the high point of the week, for a short while I would forget the everpresent slogans "Deutschland erwache!  Wir mussen die Juden ausrotten!"
("Wake up Germany! We must exterminate the Jews!")

I wore no sign identifying me as a jew, but I was afraid to be outdoors by myself.

Jewish households were no longer allowed to employ non Jewish female help or any sleep over maids. This meant our housekeeper walked 40 minutes door to door.  I was the first one up in the morning to get milk and rolls, made coffee, and carried my sandwiches to school for the midmorning break and came back home by 1:15 for the midday meal.... the main meal of the day. Then back at school by 3pm for non- academic subjects, such as gym, needlework, art, drawing, and painting.

It was after Kristallnacht in 1938, that wearing the yellow Star of David, sewn to the front and back of clothing, became mandatory for Jews.
Upon the death of German President von Hindenburg in August, 1934, Hitler now became Fuhrer...approved by a 90% electorate vote. Manipulating laws and making amendments insured that he could not be removed from office.

The fate of Germany was sealed.

#32 Lore-isms

Lore has learned to compensate for word comprehension difficulties or hearing ability, by having some very clever 'one size fits all' comments at her ready. And it's amazing how basically, by and large ...it works! No question about it.

basically
by and large
things could be worse
literally
woosh
whatever, it works!
You have to take it the way that it comes.
No question about it

**Many Thanks to Arjuna Krsna Prabhu for the beautiful flowers

#31 Reign of Terror-The Beginning

This very brief history might help us to understand the times in which Lore grew up and what her experiences were. Just try to imagine what this was like for her... just a young girl of 12.

In January of 1933, Adolf Hitler lost the presidential election in Germany but was appointed Chancellor (Prime Minister). The next month, his 40,000 strong SS personal army and SA body guards were sworn in.  Within the same month, the Nazi Party created a chaotic crisis by burning the Reichstag Parliament Building and then were granted state of emergency powers to 'restore' order. The third month, March, saw the opening of the first concentration camp in Dachau near Munich officially described for 'political prisoners.'

Hitler realized he had to use the existing legitimate democratic process if he was to seize power. By swiftly passing new laws , amendments, and a series of Acts, he achieved his means in only 3 months time. By the end of March, Parliament granted Hitler full power with an army to back him.

                                                               ***
On April 1, 1933,  a boycott of all Jewish businesses was to commence all over Germany at 10:00 a.m. On that day, uniformed Nazi guards, some armed, stood in front of Jewish business and intimidated customers who tried to enter. Storefront windows were marked with a large yellow Star of David and signs that read, "Protect Yourselves! Don't Buy From Jews! (see picture)  were posted. In some cities, Jewish doctors and lawyers were blocked from entering their offices. The boycott was supposed to be peaceful, but in some instances store windows were shattered and stores ransacked and owners beaten. Some non-German businesses and their owners were also attacked.

The boycott was slated to last indefinitely , but an early announcement that such a boycott on Jewish businesses in Germany would take place, aroused a strong response around the world. American Jews in NY protested and threatened to continue to rally if the situation didn't change. This may have been one of the reasons that the boycott in Germany lasted only one day.
Hitler's agenda was perfectly clear. Still... some did not believe it could last.

The family cloth business at 21 Blumenstrasse , their living apartments located above, was not exempt from discrimination. Lore mentions that customers who bought from the shop, never left with parcels. They were careful not to be seen purchasing from a Jewish owned business. Her stepfather offered delivery...and that was Lore's job. She was afraid and hated the task which exposed her to be seen delivering the large parcels on her bicycle. The young girl never told her parents of her fears.

*2nd pic -Blumenstrasse St today...the same pre-war buildings still stand
