Mother Lore has a very keen wit and sense of humor. This would seem to indicate that the memory part of the brain is separate from the part that processes humor and wit. Her short term memory is not even short... more like non existent. But she's able to understand and make jokes and witty remarks. Road Rules are also hardwired into her brain.
One morning, when she came to sit in her chair, she told me she was cold, so I went to get her shawl from her room. When I came back, I jokingly referred to it as her blankie. She started laughing and said that reminded her of when 'Tamal' was a little boy, cousins would come to visit and talk about their 'blankie". That was probably more than 50 years ago!

Once , when we had an appointment at the hospital, I was pushing Lore in the wheelchair. About half way down the corridor, we were coming up behind a very large lady walking ahead of us. Lore indicated with her cane of the danger that loomed up ahead and said, "Careful. I don't want her to end up in my lap."
There was some talk about her watch and how it was so reliable and kept good time. Understanding that sometimes, things don't work so well with her, at age 92.....Lore commented, "Well, at least something works." When we laughed at her joke, she took it to another level and said, " Because I used to." Then she told about her profession as a jeweler.
When we were sitting in the porch, Lore spotted a large size bug creature and called attention to it. I said that I didn't know what kind of bug that is. But Lore cleverly identified it.... "It's a big bug." she said.
Once Lore indicated with her hand , on the back of her neck, that she had a pain. "Right there." she said.
"I have a pain in my neck." Then she laughed and said, "Or I'm a big pain in the neck."
